Manchester United end six-year trophy drought with Carabao Cup win

Casemiro's header and a Sven Botman own goal secured a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Wembley

Erik ten Hag's side end their longest trophy drought since 1983

Manchester United have ended their six-year trophy drought with a pragmatic and deserved 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Casemiro's towering header put United ahead in the 33rd minute, and Sven Botman's own goal doubled their lead just before half-time.

Newcastle improved after the break, but United held on to secure their first major trophy since 2017.

The win is a major boost for Erik ten Hag, who has overseen a significant improvement in United's form since taking charge in the summer.

It is also a major statement of intent from United, who are now firmly back in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

For Newcastle, it is a disappointing end to a promising season.

Eddie Howe's side have overachieved this season, but they were second best at Wembley.

They will now have to focus on finishing the season strongly and securing a European place.
