Formel 1 Monza 2023 Qualifying

Italian GP: Sainz takes pole as Ferrari end Verstappen reign

Sainz delights Ferrari fans with Italian GP home pole

Full results from qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

Carlos Sainz Jr. claimed a famous pole position for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, ending Max Verstappen's run of five successive poles.

The Spaniard, who last started from the front of the grid at the British Grand Prix in July, edged out Red Bull's Verstappen by just 0.128 seconds at Monza.

Sainz's teammate Charles Leclerc will start third, ahead of Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull and Mercedes' George Russell.

It is the first time since the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix that neither Verstappen nor Leclerc has started a race from the front row.

Sainz's pole is also Ferrari's first at their home race since Kimi Raikkonen in 2018.

The qualifying session was briefly red-flagged after Sebastian Vettel crashed his Aston Martin at the Parabolica corner.

Vettel was unhurt, but the incident brought out the red flags for around 10 minutes.

The race starts at 2pm local time on Sunday.
